Saluting vets

Air Force Junior ROTC student Matt McHale from Shepard High School in Palos Heights salutes as military veteran Angelo Saviano of Oak Lawn resident greets his family after returning from Washington, D.C.

Shepard Junior ROTC students helped give World War II and Korean War veterans a night they always will remember through Honor Flight Chicago. ROTC aeronautical science instructors Major Dan Johnson and Chief Bill Foster, and a large group of their students participated in the welcome back festivities at Midway Airport for veterans who had spent the day in Washington, D.C.

Honor Flight enables veterans to spend the day in the capitol touring historic sites, memorials and other popular venues. The organization flies veterans and an accompanying friend or family member to Washington for the day free of charge. The welcome back event, which resembles a pep rally, features active duty military service personnel, service bands, families, friends and volunteers. As the veterans entered the public waiting area at Midway, they walked through a corridor formed by Shepard students and active duty military service men and women.
