Cougars on Parade, 5K & reunion among festivities at St. Xavier homecoming 2012

Saint Xavier University will hold several events for its annual homecoming celebration including the Cougar 5K, a gold outing and an alumni reunion.

The 2012 Homecoming Week celebration, “Cougars on Parade,” beginning Tuesday, Sept. 25 at the Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St. The Cougars on Parade Kick-Off will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on campus and at Gilhooley’s Grande Saloon, 3901 W. 103rd St.

Mirroring Chicago’s famous “Cows on Parade,” the university’s departments and organizations have decorated cougar statues for “Cougars on Parade.” The statues will be displayed beginning at noon on campus. The Spirit of Mercy Liturgy will be at noon Wednesday, Sept. 26 in McDonough Chapel of the Mother of Mercy. The liturgical celebration combines two traditions — a Mass of the Holy Spirit at the start of the academic year at Catholic universities, and the commemoration of Mercy Day at institutions sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy.

The Leadership Commissioning will be at 3:30 p.m. that day at Academy Bell, outside the Warde Academic Center. Representatives from all areas of university life– sponsors, Trustees, administrators, faculty, staff, alumni and students — will be commissioned.

The Service Through Action Team Brown Bag Project will be at 6 p.m. in the SXU Diner Atrium, Warde Academic Center. Alumni, students, staff and faculty are invited to help the university’s Service Through Action Team prepare lunches for local shelters and organizations that serve needy persons. Donations of peanut butter, jelly, snacks, and juice pouches are appreciated. The Academic Distinguished Alumni Awards and the O’Brien Student Leadership Awards Ceremony will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27 in the Butler Reception Room. The 2012 Academic Distinguished Alumni Award recipients are Jennifer Drake of Chicago, George K. McGuire Award from the School of Education; Betty Kosky of Worth, Distinguished Alumni Award from the Graham School of Management; Charlene Bermele of Evergreen Park, Distinguished Alumni Award from the School of Nursing; Daniel Brown of Palos Park, Distinguished Alumni Award from the College of Arts and Sciences; and Brian Radakovitz of Orland Park, Distinguished Alumni Award from the School for Continuing and Professional Studies.

The Alumni Links golf outing will be at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28 at Stony Creek Golf Course, 5850 W. 103rd St. in Oak Lawn. Event will feature a nine-hole scramble, miniature golf, bean bags and bocce ball. A reception on the outdoor patio will be held afterward. Cost is $45 for golf, cart, dinner and soft drinks, and $15 for miniature golf, dinner and soft drinks ($10 for children).

The 12th annual Cougar 5K Run/Walk will step off at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 from the Shannon Center. All participants receive a long sleeve Tshirt, refreshments and a ticket to the evening’s football game. The course starts and finishes on the campus and runs through Evergreen Park. The All-Alumni Reunion will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field.

The celebration will feature a pre-game reunion celebration for the classes of 1982, 1987, 1992, 2002 and 2007. Cost is $25 per person (21 years and older) and includes food and beverages. A portion of the proceeds will support the Student Scholarship Fund or the Cougar Club.

The Homecoming football game vs. University of Saint Francis (Indiana) — will be at 6 p.m. Allalumni who register at the alumni hospitality tent will be given free admission to the game.

The week will close with the Homecoming Liturgy at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 30 on the Smith-Morris Quad. The liturgy will include a blessing for the recipients of the Spirit of Saint Xavier Awards. A reception honoring these exceptional alumni will be held on the patio of the Smith-Morris Quad immediately following the liturgy. Award recipients are Kevin Clark of Oak Forest, Sister Dorothy Marie Peschon Award; Bernada Baker of Chicago, Rita A. Ford Faith in the Future Award; and Patrick “Andy” Devine of Oak Forest, Spirit of Saint Xavier Award.
