The Wine Guy: Blueberries, broccoli pack a punch

Two weeks ago I wrote about the benefits of certain fruits, and I will continue in that vein this week. Keep in mind fruits and vegetables are packed to the hilt with vitamins and minerals; good sugars that provide long-lasting energy; and other compounds that do wonders to keep the body free of sickness and disease. If you eat at least a couple cups of fruit and vegetables every day, you are highly unlikely to get sick, and if a virus or bacteria does get a foothold the duration of the sickness will be reduced.

One fantastic fruit is the blueberry, which is a good blood purifier and antiseptic. It can also help treat anemia, constipation, poor complexion, diarrhea, dysentery, obesity and menstrual disorders.

Nuts are not a fruit, but fruit comes from nuts, and an extremely powerful nut is the Brazil nut. It may be one of the most nourishing foods on the planet, unfortunately, some people have trouble digesting them. For those who can eat nuts these are loaded with protein and thus are great muscle-builders. They are also good for strengthening teeth and bones.

Another of nature's most powerful foods is broccoli. This vegetable is high in fiber and as such excellent for keeping the bowels moving regularly. Children should eat broccoli often because of this, and also just because it is really good for them. It is indicated to help regulate blood pressure and is high in iron and many essential vitamins and minerals. It is also loaded with antioxidants, which ris the body of the biological pollutants known as free radicals that can damage cells and cause terrible diseases such as cancer.

Cabbage should also be eaten, raw by those who can digest it without difficulty. This is a truly marvelous food that contains vitamins A, B1, B2, C and K (potassium). It is a good musclebuilder and blood cleanser, and is good for the bones, teeth, hair and nails. It may also help keep your vision strong and can treat asthma, gout, scurvy, constipation, kidney and bladder disorders, skin eruptions and poor complexion.

One method of getting your vegetables and the nutrients they contain is by eating soup. Dice some onions, carrots, celery and garlic and let them simmer in a pot of broth for about 20 minutes. You can add rice, tomatoes, beans, herbs and pretty much whatever else you want to soup, there is no right or wrong and whatever you put in it is bound to be good for you. No salt is even necessary because the flavors of the vegetables will be enough. Eat this soup for breakfast, lunch and dinner all year long - it is so good you won't even mind eating it during the hot summer months.

As always, I recommend drinking wine with your meals - breakfast, lunch and dinner. It will keep the blood flowing, the mind relaxed and alert, and the immune system clipping along at full speed.

Dee Woods: Flu shot proves to be epic fail

MIXING IT UP FOR GOOD HEALTH
By Dee Woods

Generally speaking, I'm happy Dr. Oz has a television show that promotes alternative and natural health. Also, generally speaking, I can't for the love of me understand why Dr. Oz would recommend getting a flu shot.

In fact, everywhere you look, you see ads imploring you to get the latest, "very effective" flu shot this year. Seems they say that every year.

In order to convince his trusting public to take the shot, Dr. Oz administered the latest flu vaccine to CNN talk show host Piers Morgan, right there in front of our eyes. Now that should be convincing, and it was - for about two weeks, because Morgan claims he was struck down with a horrid flu 10 days or so after getting the vaccine. I guess the shot didn't work for him, and it seems there were many people who also had the shot and still got the flu. We all know many.

Well, guess what? Last week, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a press release admitting the vaccine was an abject failure. A whopping 91 percent of senior citizens were not protected by the vaccine, according to the CDC's own admission. Last year's shot wasn't too hot either. Oh, and the year before that wasn't the best for the shot because they claim they "guessed" the wrong strain of flu.

According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, the 2011 vaccine prepared for senior citizens contained four times the regular antigen content with hopes it "may" create a better immune response among seniors. Don't you love the word "may?" They admit they had no proof or studies to indicate that was the case. The problem with the high-dose Fluzone was that it came with a large set of complications and side effects, especially among seniors.

So, why does it hurt to get the shot? Probably because the ingredients aren't really all that good for you. Aluminum, formaldyhyde and thimerisol (a mercury derivative). All of these ingredients can affect your body and brain, and mercury is a serious toxin. It's true, a patient can ask for "Thimerisol-free" injections, but how many do? How many know they can? Probably very few, and the Thimerisol-free vaccines still contain a small amount of Thimerisol. They also include an antibiotic to keep the vaccine free of bacteria, according to Mercola. Sometimes patients are allergic to the antibiotic and patients are not warned to replace the friendly gut bacteria with acidophilus, a probiotic.

In 2007, an article published in the Annals of Medicine explained the vaccine elicits an inflammatory response. The flu vaccine may also pose an immediate risk to your cardiovascular system due to the fact that they elicit that inflammatory response. One 2007 study that appeared in the Annals of Medicine concluded that: "Abnormalities in arterial function and LDL oxidation may persist for at least two weeks after a slight inflammatory reaction induced by influenza vaccination." Is this good for seniors or those with cardiovascular disorders? You and your physician must decide.

At any rate, what advice does the CDC give the public about the largely ineffective vaccine? They say you should get it anyway! For a "possible" 9 percent of protection, you should expose yourself to such toxins? Not so much! Can't help but wonder what's going on here. We must always use common sense - especially when government doesn't.

Dee Woods: Stem cells the cornerstone of healing

MIXING IT UP FOR GOOD HEALTH
By Dee Woods

We've heard the pros and cons about stem cell research, but many people are not aware that adult stem cells are offering tremendous strides in medical advancement and healing.

Many people believe stem cell research is referencing embryonic stem cells, but that's not correct. Many scientists believe fetal stem cells are not the wave of the future, simply because there is a problem with tumor growth. Now, adult stem cells are working wonders in the advancement of modern medicine, according to Dr. Julian Whitaker.

Whitaker writes of a 15-yearold boy who wanted to become a scientist, but his teacher thought it was a foolish endeavor. The teacher, not recognizing the genius of the boy, wrote: "I believe Gordon has ideas about becoming a scientist; on his present showing this is quite ridiculous it would be a sheer waste of time, both on his part and of those who would have to teach him."

Sir John Gordon, is now 79 years old and shared the 2012 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work on stem cell research. I guess you could say his teacher was way off base.

Whitaker explains exactly how adult stem cells work. "The primary function of adult stem cells, which reside throughout the body, is to maintain and repair tissues. Their innate brilliance lies in their ability to zero in on areas of damage or degeneration."

He explains the cells are first signaled to go into action by inflammation in the body. Inflammation is the body's cry for help. The stem cells then migrate to wherever they're needed. They also take cues from surrounding cells to restore and to regenerate, according to Whitaker.

"Adult stem cells are being used to treat a wide variety of health challenges across a broad range of clinical specialties," he writes. "Non-embryonic adult mesenchymal stem cells obtained from your own fat have the ability to repair a variety of cell types and help regenerate damaged tissue. Stem cells seek out areas of injury and disease and accelerate the body's natural healing response."

Believe it or not, cardiologists have already used a patient's stem cells to regenerate muscle tissue in heart attack patients. Stem cells are also being used for multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, stroke and other neurological conditions, according to Whitaker. They are being used in orthopedic conditions and for hair restoration as well.

Thus far, bone marrow mesenchymal cells have been used, but Whitaker explains that with all the medical advancements it is far easier to use the body's fat cells, known as adipose-derived stromal vascular cell therapy, as the safest treatment. Whitaker explains that it was discovered that mesenchymal cells are abundant in our own fat and that even newer technologies make it possible to remove fat and separate the stems cells to isolate high numbers of viable cells, and merely return them back into the body via IV or injection. This generally does not require hospital stays, and can be done as an outpatient procedure. There is no concern for rejection because the cells are your own.

As with everything else in the world, there are times when such methods don't work, but that's true with every so-called "cure" we have, both natural and conventional.

Seeing science working in this fashion is truly an exciting step forward. There is a Stem Cell Treatment Center in Newport Beach, Calif. Learn more by going to nbstemcell.com.

Another lesson is that we must not allow another human being to discourage our own valiant goals. We wouldn't have this technology and Gordon wouldn't have been awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine if he had been deterred by that "educator."

The Wine Guy: Pop the cork and open the Fountain of Youth

Best of The Wine Guy

The Wine Guy
with Anthony Scarano

We know red wine is good for the heart, but research is indicating it may also fight a multitude of cancers. This power of wine is due to the chemicals, including resveratrol, found in the skins of red grapes.

In the same vein, an American company claims to have available a marvelous anti-aging supplement containing resveratrol. This substance is an antibacterial and antifungal agent produced by plants and may reduce inflammation, lower blood sugar and fight cancer in humans. It has been proven to work in mice, but research has not yet yielded the same results in humans.

The scientific community is nonetheless excited about the possible benefits of resveratrol. The greatest focus on resveratrol right now is as an anti-aging agent that keeps the heart pumping more efficiently and can restore a youthful look.

A supplement containing resveratrol is now available. Vivix contains no artificial colors, sweeteners or preservatives, and the company that produces it claims a 30-day supply - a teaspoon a day - delivers resveratrol in an amount equivalent to 3,000 glasses of red wine (100 glasses of wine a day).

Laboratory tests have showed Vivix to be 10 times more powerful than resveratrol alone as far as slowing down cellular aging. People who tested the product for a couple of weeks claimed it cured gout, cleared their sinuses, eliminated tremors and age spots, and relieved their headaches. Other people claimed their asthma was less severe, they slept better, and that aches they experienced for years because of arthritis disappeared.

All of this sounds marvelous and miraculous, and if it were true would be a breakthrough in science. It couldn't hurt to try it. For information about Vivix call Evergreen Park resident Tammy Schweiger at 663-4226 or 952-0133, or write to her at 9334 Clifton Park Ave., Evergreen Park, IL 60805.

Don't forget to drink your wine, however. This wonderful tonic, drunk daily methodically and in moderation, can keep you healthy and looking and feeling young. Its antibacterial, antiviral and anticancer properties make it perhaps the most import food you will consume all day.
