What's Going On

Palos Twp. GOP, Southwest Suburban Republican picnic

The Palos Township Republican Organization and Committeemen Sean M. Morrison invite the community to the local GOP picnic on Saturday, Sept. 8, from noon to 3 p.m., at the Palos Park Recreation Center, 8901 W. 123rd St.

Includes burgers, hotdogs, soft drinks, beer and wine, DJ, games and activities for kids.

Invited Republican guest speakers are Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford, Cook County Republican Party Chairman Aaron Del Mar, Cook County Commissioner Elizabeth "Liz" Doody Gorman and Republican candidates.

Free admission; donations gladly accepted.

The picnic is sponsored by the Palos, Lemont, Orland and Worth township Republican organizations.

Dahlia Show

The Southtown Dahlia Club will hold an event from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1 and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2 at the Crestwood Civic Center, 14025 Kostner Ave. in Crestwood. Show will feature blossoms, mini-blooms and basket arrangements of flowers from from half-inch poms to dinner-plate size dahlias. Admission is free. Flea Market

The Knights of Columbus Our Lady of the Ridge Chapter 13201 will hold a flea market from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8 at Our Lady of the Ridge, 10811 Ridgeland Ave. in Chicago Ridge. For more information call Joe Burke at 923-0140.

Garden Club

The Southwest Community Garden Club will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12 at Chicago High School for the Agricultural Sciences, 3837 W. 111th St. in Chicago. Blood Drive

LifeSource will hold a blood drive from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9 at the Hickory Hills Community Center, 7800 W. 89th Place. There will be a barbecue and raffle drawing. For an appointment call (877) 543-3768.

Widows & Widowers

The Southwest Suburban Widow or Widowers (WOW) will meet at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 at Zion Lutheran Church, 17100 S. 70th Ave. in Tinley Park. There will be entertainment and refreshments. For more information call (630) 778-9368.

Free Health Screenings

The Oak Lawn Community Partnership will hold free health screenings at the Oak Lawn Public Library, 9427 S. Raymond Ave., Wednesday, Sept. 12 from 10 to 11 a.m. Blood pressure screenings will be performed by personnel from the Oak Lawn Fire Department, glaucoma screenings will be offered Dr. Katherine Narbone of Complete Vision Care in Oak Lawn.
