A funeral Mass was held Monday at St. Linus Church for an 81-year-old Oak Lawn woman killed in an automobile accident last week in Palos Heights.

Shirley Ronan was turning left out of the Westgate Valley subdivision at 135th Street and Forest Ridge Drive at around 2:39 p.m. July 17 when the car she was driving was struck by a vehicle traveling west on 135th, said Palos Heights Police Deputy Chief Dave Delaney. Ronan was making an illegal left-hand turn, Delaney said.

No charges have been filed against the 63-year-old Orland Park man who was driving the other vehicle, Delaney said. The man was not injured in the accident, he added.

“According to a witness, she hesitated, and the gentleman from Orland Park struck her on the driver’s side,” he explained.

Ronan was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and pronounced dead at about 11:30 p.m, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The official cause of death was cranial cerebral injuries sustained during a motor vehicle accident.

Visitation for Mrs. Ronan, nee Ward, was held Sunday at the Andrew J. McGann & Son Funeral Home in Chicago. A funeral Mass was held Monday at St. Linus Church in Oak Lawn. Interment was at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Worth.

Mrs. Ronan is survived by her sons, Arthur and Todd; her daughter, Lynn Pratt; her sister, LaVerne Rich; and six grandchildren.

Mrs. Ronan was born in Chicago. She worked as a teacher for the Chicago Public Schools. She was a member of St. Linus Church in Oak Lawn. Donations to Misericordia can be made in Mrs. Ronan’s honor to 6300 N. Ridge Ave. in Chicago.
